It has long since ceased to be just the people of Graubünden who are firmly convinced that, apart from Burgundy, the Herrschaft has the best terroir for Pinot Noir. «If you consider the price-performance ratio, we are even better than Burgundy,» says Micha Davaz emphatically. The cornerstone of success is the chalky, permeable soils, which have a high percentage of Bündner Schiefer. The other important ingredient is the ideal climate, which is characterized by plenty of sunshine, the Foehn wind, and the enormously important, large temperature differences between day and night.
Micha and Luca - together with their four sisters - grew up on the vineyard that their grandfather founded in the 1970s. It is located between Fläsch and Maienfeld, quite remote and in the middle of the vines. An idyll? «We had to lend a hand at an early age, but we also had fun doing it. For example, I was already driving the tractor up and down the vineyard at the age of 10. Later, as a teenager, I didn't always like it when I had to be ready early in the morning on Saturdays or during school vacations,» confesses Micha. As tedious as it was to have to trot to the vineyard after going out, the two are grateful today for the wealth of experience they were able to gain. They have Pinot Noir in their blood and are deeply rooted in the unique terroir. Since 2016, von Salis has been vinifying individual vineyards from the Bündner Herrschaft - with great success. In 2018, for example, they won the coveted Grand Prix du Vin Suisse in the undisputed supreme discipline of Pinot Noir. So the «Töfflibuebe» are definitely in the fast lane!
